Holiday Shopping Trend- Ride Globally, Shop Locally

This is the year to shop local!  For a shop whose motto is Ride Globally, Shop Locally; we truly believe that our community becomes stronger and healthier by riding our bikes and supporting our local small businesses.  The Bike Lane is excited about programs like Small Business Saturday that help drive business back to the community.    We also love to see articles like the one below that highlight a variety of great small businesses in our community.  Shop with them all year round but especially during the holidays.  Strong small businesses equal strong communities!

Get ready to toss out the candy corn and grab the candy canes. Black Friday—the hottest holiday shopping day of the year—is right around the corner. What’s one of the biggest trends this year? Shopping locally. Below is a list of local “mom and pop” niche stores that make vital contributions to the local economy, generate jobs and offer unique products and stellar personal service. Unlike many big national chains, they know their products, and are able to accommodate special requests. When you call, you are more likely to get a real, live person to help you. Who could ask for a better holiday gift?

Shop The Bike Lanes Small Business Saturday

join the movement and support local businesses, like The Bike Lane

After you have shopped yourself out at the big box stores on Friday save a little energy for the little guys.  Did you know that for every $100 spent at a local store, $68 stays in your community (according to research firm Civic Economics). That compares with only $43 when you shop at a chain store. Read a little more for the USA Today article about Small Business Strategies .  The  Bike Lane is the essence of America’s small business. We employ about 12 full timers at our two locations and about 30-40 employees during our peek season.  We strive to support and give back to the community in everything from our Toys for Tots Bike Fundraiser to the local non profit Trails for Youth. We also sponsor, attend, and support more than 50 cycling events throughout the year.  We won’t talk (or write) your ear off about everything we do but we can sincerely say that we not only sell bikes, we are proud members of the Northern Virginia community, and we support it whenever possible.  Whether you shop with us this Saturday, or shop elsewhere, we hope you will support a small business in your community while doing some of your holiday shopping.
